Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat coronary artery disease (CAD), which involves the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. During PCI, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel, typically in the groin or wrist, and guided to the site of the blockage in the coronary artery. Once in place, a small balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated to compress the plaque and widen the narrowed artery, restoring blood flow. Additionally, a stent—a mesh-like metal tube—may be inserted to hold the artery open and prevent it from narrowing again.
Procedure:
